The Story
During World War II, nickel was critical to the war effort — so from 1942 to 1945 the U.S. Mint struck Jefferson nickels in a 35% silver alloy instead, marked by a large mintmark above Monticello. 'War nickels' are a tangible piece of home-front history and the only nickels ever to contain silver.
